Yesterday I relaxed a lot... But I ended up wasting almost the entire night watching the 1997 film the Postman, which is one of the more terrible films to have ever come out. I was not pleased with it at all. The plot was everywhere, the film was full of corny lines. It just did not flow well. However, it was indeed interesting to see Tom Petty in an acting role (even though he was merely being himself). If the film starred Tom Petty and not Kevin Costner it would have been much better just because you would be seeing Tom Petty doing all of those things, and there would be something great about that -- there would be a certain touch of irony and blissful, childish fun about the film that would make it better.
Kind of like Werner Herzog always brings this bizarre, angry, slightly mad feeling to Julien Donkey-Boy just because of the nature of who he is (not necessarily because of the role itself) so, too, would Tom Petty bring a feeling of childish fun and enjoyment to the Postman that could make the film so much better.
It is true that actors bring a lot to a film: we are influenced by our prejudices and imbibe the images of who this person is, and we are influenced by them. That is why even though I think that Ocean's Twelve will be good, it might not be so good, just because of the problem that exists of dealing with so many overpaid superstars.
There is only a very specific list of Hollywood actors that lend genuine feeling to a film for more, that I actually enjoy watching when they act. Other actors with big names sometimes turn me off from the film, just because they rub me the wrong way.
Today: more film reviews, I hope to write.
We are testing in Korean some more, and it is going very well. I hope that all of you enjoy your day.
